I love those videos where a group of very serious types are rigidly holding a board for a breaking demonstration knowing very well that the spinning heel kick is going to miss completely and catch one of them in the face.

The truth is we can only ever think we know something – and even that might be wrong.

I had to risk a radical departure today with a six framer. I hope it works. It’s ended up being a lot deeper than I thought, but I’m going to ignore that and just hope its funny.

Can you put a price on knowledge? I suspect most definitely. Can you put a price on wisdom? That’s a different matter.

Of course, we’re only as insignificant and pointless as any other bit

I read in one of Neil Adam’s books that a right of passage in judo clubs was often to be strangled unconscious on your first session after being awarded your 1st dan. Wetting yourself was a likely side effect. I think I’d have probably cut out the middle man.

I showed this cartoon to my wife and her response was “God. That’s just you.” And sadly, she’s right.

All my recent smugness about posting early has come to an end. Work will get in the way of the more important things in life and I’m back to the last minute, frantic scraping of the brain for an idea on Saturday morning. Oh well.

I find the trouble with these kind of zen ideas is that while I understand what they are trying to say – I don’t feel it. Must try harder… or maybe I must stop trying altogether. That’s the other trouble with zen.

This is based on a story told to me by a great martial artist. I’m not going to mention his name as he is far too busy to cope with all the demands for one to one tuition that would no doubt arise. However, I’m sure that before to long it will find its way into the Fudebakudo syllabus

This weeks cartoon is a tribute to my wonderful father-in-law, Joe Dwan, a wonderful man and proper old school cartoonist (i.e. regularly published and paid!). If it wasn’t for his enthusiastic encouragement over the years Mikka would have never happened. I could not have been more welcomed into a family and he will be very much missed by all who knew him and his work.
